  Program Highlight
  The Monash Master in Counselling is an innovative program specially designed to fulfill the demand for counselling knowledge and skills from professional people with an interest in counselling. The program provides a professional qualification and real-life counselling expertise for people who may not be practicing psychologists or social workers, but who nonetheless have a strong interest in counselling.

The Master in Counselling suits people from a variety of professions such as Human Resources, Education, Personal Development Training, Healthcare and Social Welfare etc. Specific objectives of the program are to ensure an advanced level of knowledge about major approaches to counselling to provide training in counselling practice and develop skills for immediate application in the workplace; and to introduce the study of ethical and professional issues in undertaking counselling as a profession.

Monash University is one of Australia's prestigious Group of Eight universities with its dedication to the highest educational and research standards. Rankings of universities in the Times Higher Education - QS World University Rankings 2009 placed Monash University at number 45 in the world.

The MIC program consists of 6 units, which can be completed in 18 months as follows:
 
Term 1 Introduction to counselling across the lifespan 12 credits
Term 2 Assessment in counselling 12 credits
Term 3 Counselling for the professions 12 credits
Term 4 Ethics in counselling 12 credits
Term 5 Cognitive-behavioural approaches to crucial issues in living 12 credits
Term 6 Field experience in counselling* 12 credits

Exemption can be given to those already have 4th year of tertiary education, 2 units will be exempted and programme can be completed in 12 months:
Term 1 Counselling for the professions 12 credits
Term 2 Ethics in Counselling 12 credits
Term 3 Cognitive-behavioural approaches to crucial issues in living 12 credits
Term 4 Field experience in counselling* 12 credits
* While assistance will be provided, students are expected to secure their own practicum placement with counselling agencies or social service centres. Monash and Kaplan Higher Education have ongoing associations in the local market in this respect and will assist as necessary. Cost of on-site or individual practicum supervision is negotiable between students and their supervisors, payable directly by students to their supervisors.

All units are taught by experienced Monash University academic staff with professional experience in counselling and psychology.

    Each unit will be formally assessed by reports, essays, examinations and/ or case studies
     
      Entry Requirement
     
  • Applicants must hold an approved three-year undergraduate qualification

  • English Language Requirements:
    - At least three years of study (preferably in the last five years) in a university or approved tertiary institution where English is the language of instruction and assessment of the entire institution, and this is verified by the institution. A faculty interview to assess oral proficiency may be required; or
    - IELTS (academic) of at least 7 with a score of at least 7 on speaking and writing and at least 6.5 on reading and listening*, or
    - Internet-based TOEFL of at least 100 with a score of at least 25 for writing and speaking, and at least 22 for reading and listening*.


  • Note: * All test scores must be no more than 2 years old at the time of application [or accompanied by evidence of substantial study in a tertiary institution where courses are taught and assessed in English].

    Students are expected to undertake all 6 units in the Program Content unless granted advanced standing by the University.

    Advanced standing entry:
  • Credit may be granted for the first two units whereby students may achieve the MIC degree by completing four units in twelve months.

  • Students applying for advanced standing must demonstrate the equivalent of a 4th year qualification completed at Monash University or at another tertiary institution, including overseas universities.

  • Advanced standing will be based on qualifications, academic merit, relevant work experience, referee reports and / or interviews (telephone or face-to-face).

      Program outcomes
  • Graduates will be allowed to use the award title MCoun after their names.

  • The degree conferred is exactly the SAME as those awarded to on campus students.

  • Graduates will gain

    1. professional recognition from the Australian Counselling Association (ACA), and admitted as Registered Counsellor
    2. and membership of Asian Professional Counselling Association (APCA)
